VPS vs. Dedicated Hosting: Which Should Your Business Choose?

In most cases, a minimal spike in web traffic is not enough to warrant a dedicated server for a small business. Virtual solutions are competitively priced with lower resource requirements. In the SMB space, most competitors live in the VPS space. The majority of dedicated servers are populated by internationally recognized, enterprise-level companies.

Examine how you will use your hosting service in-house. Do you have the staff to handle on-going maintenance? Can you upgrade hardware internally?
Depending on your answers, you may want to modify your approach. Managed hosting may cost more than traditional hosting, but it can improve your efficiency within the VPS environment to the level of a dedicated server. Although this is undoubtedly more achievable on the lower end of the resource spectrum, it is an aspect to consider.
Another consideration is future growth. Is your company looking to scale? Have you quantified this growth for the next five to ten years?
You should select a platform for the present and five years from now. One aspect that many companies overlook is the ability to scale down as well as up.
If you invest in a dedicated server, you will always pay for the same volume of resources. You may end up wasting money if your needs reduce over time.

How Does Server Colocation Hosting Work ?

Maintaining and managing servers begins by ensuring the environment allows them to work at full capacity. However, this is the main problem businesses with “server closets” deal with. If companies are incapable of taking on such responsibilities on-premises, they will search for a data center that offers colocation services.

Colocation as a service works for businesses who already own hardware and software, but are unable to provide the conditions to store them. The clients, therefore, lease space from their service providers who offer housing for hardware, as well as environmental management.

Clients move their hardware to a data center, set up, and configure their servers. There is no physical contact between the provider and the clients’ hardware unless they specifically request additional assistance known as remote hands.

While the hardware is hosted, the data center assumes all responsibility for environmental management, such as cooling, a reliable power supply, on-premises security, and protection against natural disasters.

The hosting company’s responsibilities typically include:

Security
The hosting company secures and authorizes access to the physical location. The security measures include installing equipment such as cameras, biometric locks, and identification for any personnel onsite. Clients are responsible for securing their servers against cyber-attacks. The provider ensures no one without authorization can come close to the hardware.

Power
The data center is responsible for electricity and any other utilities required by the servers. This also includes energy backups, such as generators, in case of a power outage. Getting and using power efficiently is an essential component. Data centers can provide a power supply infrastructure that guarantees the highest uptime.

Cooling
Servers and network equipment generate a considerable amount of heat. Hosts provide advanced redundant cooling systems, so servers run optimally. Proper cooling can prevent damage and extends the life of your hardware.

Colocation Service - Does Your Business Need It?

Today’s fast shifting economic environment pushes businesses to provide a great amount of flexibility in all areas. If a company is achieving growth, it’s infrastructure must be ready to quickly scale in order to maintain or offer an increased level of quality of their product or service. Considering the increasing relevance of IT departments, they often come under big pressure to deliver more services, in faster timeframes, with smaller budgets and leaner staff.

At one point, a company’s growth will bump directly into it’s own IT infrastructure limitations. That critical moment usually requires an efficient, long-term solution to be implemented. A rapid growth often involves the need for top performing IT infrastructure which can be expensive and require specific technical skills along with increased maintenance and internal logistic costs. Such an investment can be quite heavy and often far from the core business. Most struggle with data center transformations, and are looking for alternatives to traditional on-premises data center approaches. It’s then they often opt for colocation or cloud-based infrastructure.

Colocation services (also known as “colo”) offer a secure environment for hardware and access to network connectivity that enables reaching customers worldwide. Typically, a colocation service  provides the building, cooling, power, bandwidth and physical security while the customer provides servers. Capacities in the facility are leased by the rack, cabinet, cage or room.

For some organizations, colocation may be an ideal solution, but there are a few downsides to watch out when implementing this approach. Geographical distance can translate into increased travel costs when the equipment needs to be managed manually. Also, colocation customers can lock themself into long-term contracts, which prevents re-negotiations when prices fall.

Top Reasons Why Businesses Choose Colocation - Data First

While choosing such a strategy, it is also important to focus on support, costs, security controls and uptime. While it sounds nearly impossible to satisfy all of these requirements and simultaneously watch your business flourish, colocation services may offer a feasible solution.

Colocation, often referred to as colo, entails the installation of your business servers in an offsite managed data center. Colocation services offer several benefits..

  • Lowering power costs generated by servers and cooling;
  • 24/7 support from experts;
  • Optimizing space in your office by removing a significant portion of your IT equipment;
  • Improving physical security
  • Providing guaranteed uptime

3 Keys to Effective Data Center Capacity Planning

There is a well-earned sense of satisfaction when your IT department finally has your data center set up and performing the way it’s meant to: efficiently and securely managing your software applications, telecommunications, and data storage. However, this is not the time to rest on your laurels. Instead, you need to formulate a data center infrastructure management (DCIM) plan, a major component of which includes data center capacity, to account for current and future needs.
Current Hardware
Determining current and upcoming hardware capabilities falls into two categories: inventory and performance. Knowing exactly what you have will allow you to understand exactly what your data center can (and can’t) do, as well as assess its future capabilities.
On the inventory side, you need to document each server’s name, make and model, operating system (OS), speeds, memory and disk space, network interface cards (NICs) and speeds, and total number of central processing units (CPUs). On the performance side, document each CPU queue, percentage per CPU used, percentage of memory used, memory paging, disk inputs/outputs (I/Os), and actual network speed.
Infrastructure Growth
While the data center capacity that you have now may work fine for your current needs, what happens if (or when) you have to scale up? Costs to run a traditional data center typically range from $10M to $25M per year, and you’ll likely need to investigate—regardless of the system you are using now—the possibilities offered by the four types of data centers:
  • In-house facilities owned and operated by the company using them
  • Co-location systems where servers are housed together for use by multiple clients with their own private computer cloud storage systems
  • Scientific computing systems run by national laboratories
  • Public cloud providers such as Google and Amazon
Future Needs
No matter which of the options above works best for you now, or will be your optimal choice in the future, the decisions you make should consider the following criteria:
  • Fault tolerance (fire suppression, air conditioning redundancy, dual electrical sources)
  • Security/safety (biometric hand scanners, defined floor access procedures, locked cages and cabinets)
  • Capabilities/scalability (total cooling capacity, minimum 18” raised floor, number of cabinets)
  • Core service standards (on-site service personnel, maintenance schedule, alarm system)
  • Location risk profile (flooding probability, aircraft flight plans, distance from railroad/highway, seismic profile)

Window Vs Linus Hosting - Data first

Most web hosts tend to fall somewhere in between these two extremes. You will need to speak with the web hosts you are interested in to see exactly what they offer. Not all managed hosts operate in the same way or offer the same services.

In addition to considering how much of these administrative tasks you want to tackle on your own (as well as what you are comfortable doing), you will need to consider your budget. No rule of thumb says how much managed services run, but they do have a cost. http://bit.ly/2EwcuKx

How Does VPS Hosting Compare to Dedicated Servers?

There are a lot of similarities between VPS hosting options and dedicated servers.

Both options offer you increased control over your hosting environment, especially with regards to the software that is installed. Both options offer you the option of purchasing the specs that you need when it comes to hardware.

Though this analogy is overly simplistic, you can think of a VPS plan as a light version of a dedicated server. A VPS plan is set up like a shared plan but behaves like a dedicated server. A VPS plan offers you a chance to try out the most premium of hosting options, a dedicated server, without the cost.

Cost
It will be no surprise to you that VPS plans are cheaper than dedicated servers. When a web host can put multiple customers on a single server, they can charge less to each customer.

Most web hosts tend to fall somewhere in between these two extremes. You will need to speak with the web hosts you are interested in to see exactly what they offer (and what they do not). Not all managed hosts operate in the same way or offer the same services.

In addition to considering how much of these administrative tasks you want to tackle on your own (as well as what you are comfortable doing), you will need to consider your budget. No rule of thumb says how much managed services run, but they do have a cost (sometimes considerably so).

6 Benefits Of COLOCATION For Your Business

Colocation is a hosting option utilized for businesses of all sizes for a variety of reasons.  Small businesses can obtain needed features of a large IT department without the capital investment. Medium to large sized enterprises can expand their infrastructure capacity without undertaking costly construction or facility leasing.
Colocation allows you to store your equipment in a cabinet located in a secure data center with a public IP address, bandwidth, and power supplied by the service provider to your server.
Colocation also provides:
  1. Better connectivity. Colocation data centers have fully redundant network connections ensuring that customers’ business critical applications always run uninterrupted.
  2. Improved network security. Data centers have top-notch network security, including the latest firewalls / IDS systems to detect and prevent unauthorized access to their customers’ systems.
  3. Redundant power supply. Colocation data centers offer power redundancy through a combination of multiple power grids, diesel power generators, double battery backup systems and excellent maintenance practices.
  4. Bursting capability. Colocation centers provide customers with the flexibility to burst to higher bandwidth levels to accommodate their traffic demand without having to make repeat capital investments. Since data spikes are distributed over time across numerous users, bandwidth costs are significantly reduced.
  5. Room for growth. Colocation allows you to expand your infrastructure to fit the needs of your company’s growth without having to take on capital expenditures. If you’re company grows, your IT infrastructure can expand to support it quickly and with less investment.
  6. A step toward cloud migration. If your company is looking at cloud computing in the near future, colocation provides a smooth transition by allowing you to move your equipment to an offsite facility with increased capacity and performance to support business needs while ensuring a smooth cloud transition.

How does Server Colocation Relate to Data Centers?

It is necessary to understand what the terms mean and what their advantages and drawbacks are. The data centers are essentially centralized locations in which computing hardware and networking equipment are kept for storing, processing and distributing data. The servers which are housed in a data center are connected to communication networks and this lets people access them and get information from them remotely. Almost every company or government organization is going to need a private data center to maintain its data securely. Alternately, it can house its data in a third party space from where it can access it remotely.

When you wish to understand the co-relation between cloud, server colocation and data centers, you have to realize that in server colocation, servers will still be your property but they will be managed and monitored by a third party. So, as a client, you get to access these servers via a VPN or across the Internet. The main reason why server colocation is being preferred to privately-owned data centers is to cut down costs. Businesses can now get enhanced IT amenities and supports without having to break the bank.

While you may own everything and you have full freedom to customize these, you are also fully responsible for all glitches which may arise from time to time. The hardware remains on-site and your staff can access it or maintain it without hassles. But, if your in-house staff is not adequately qualified, you may have to get extra technical support which turns out to be much costlier in the long run.

Why “Data Center as a Service” (DCaaS) is the Future of Colocation

The challenges of maintaining a private IT infrastructure have long pushed organizations to consider alternative options to meet their data and computing needs. While there are certainly benefits to using an on-premises data solution, the significant cost of building this infrastructure is beyond the reach of most startups and smaller companies. For many of these companies, cloud providers once seemed like the ideal solution, but concerns about data availability and security have caused some to reconsider the public cloud.

Fortunately, there is an alternative. Colocation data centers can provide companies with all the power and control they expect from an on-premises solution as well as the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of the cloud. With the data center as a service (DCaaS) model, today’s data center providers are finding ways to offer compelling solutions for fast-growing organizations looking to compete in an increasingly crowded market where speed and adaptability are critical to success.

Choose a Quality Dedicated Server Hosting Provider

Users who are reading this are fairly thoughtful when it comes to making right decisions about choosing hosting for their business. Making a well informed choice is imperative because transitioning from one dedicated server host to another is not an easy job. It may have serious implications, right from frustrated customers to decrease in traffic that could ultimately affect revenue at a larger extent. In today's competitive environment, there may not be second and third chance.

So here are 5 important considerations for making dedicated server hosting provider choice:

  •   Physical location of the host:  Location could be one of the important factors especially when your application is highly bandwidth dependent. While assessing the location of a colocation service, you need to consider in which country/state is the service physically located and how far is it from your company. As you have considerable control on server resources in dedicated environment, the question is how easy it would be for you to manage in terms of any routine upgrade, or service your equipment or any new installations.
  •  Services Flexibility and Expansion Capability:  How scalable are the services to your growing operations is something to be considered essentially! How customized the services bundling is with the host? How is the customized service model going to affect your CapEx and OpEx ? You may want to think about these questions and ensure that your service partner has the capability to cater to your growing business demands together with a competitive pricing.
  •  Reliable host with super reliable service:  In the world of data centers, the reliability is measured by uptime. Technically, a reliable provider should have five 9s uptime, meaning they are considered most reliable if they have 99.999% uptime. Though there could be many possibilities, one of the ways to ensure a trusted reliability is to check if any customer feedback is available.
  • Easy deployment of services: How fast you can push your services in the environment with long delay and disruptions in the services? How one can cross connect or add an additional rack space on demand? The demands in business are dynamic and might need scaling up anytime! The answer to these questions lies in the efficacy to deliver with high scalability and minimum disruption. Make sure you have clear timelines when it comes to pushing up the scalability and transition of your services' demand.
  • Network Ecosystem of the host: There are a lot of hosts in the market thereby not making it easy for anyone to choose easily. It is important to consider the seamless network connectivity capability of the host, which is, the backbone of colocation services and rest all would be meaningless without it. Invalidated network ecosystem is like a gun without assurance of bullets inside. To ensure a thorough check, you may want to ensure if the facility is carrier-neutral and if the Collocation service provider has a decent ecosystem of customers already interconnect with each other, it is a clear sign of trusted services.

VPS Hosts and Their Responsibilities

When choosing a VPS hosting provider, make sure you do your homework. The provider of VPS hosting service should be efficient enough, to comprehend the business goals and be able to tackle every loophole within the websites, to ensure there is no problem during the time of hosting.

Virtual private servers take care of dividing the physical server properly and enabling each node to act as an independent unit. While all the virtual servers on one physical server share the common resources such as, memory, disk space, bandwidth, CPU, and RAM, they work in flawless synch without any problem. All the system resources are shared between the nodes in parallel so the productivity is really very impressive, as the bandwidth is never lower than what's required and the server uptime is optimal.

Virtual private servers remain completely isolated from one another which permits them to maintain privacy with their applications. It also assists to keep the neighbors unaltered by any issue faced by one of the virtual private servers. It is a secured way of hosting a website either for personal reasons or business.

PHP, multiple domains, and MySQL databases, unlimited email accounts, add-on domains are all included in a VPS hosting India package. These may be difficult to handle separately and therefore, VPS hosts offer WHM control panels to regulate all the accounts in one single go. DATA FIRST is India’s leading Tier-III Data Centre with specialization in Managed Infrastructure & Platform solutions.
